What Goes Into Our AFL Model
Our AFL tipping model evaluates each match across several dimensions:
- Team ratings — Elo-style ratings adjusted for margin, venue, and opponent quality
- Recent form — Weighted performance over the last 5-8 rounds, not just wins and losses but scoring patterns and defensive pressure
- Venue adjustments — Home ground advantage varies enormously in AFL. Playing at the MCG as a Melbourne-based team is very different to playing at Perth Stadium
- Player availability — Key ins and outs that shift a team's expected performance
- Market comparison — We compare our projected lines and totals against bookmaker odds to find genuine value
This isn't a black box. Every factor is grounded in real statistical relationships observed over thousands of AFL matches.
Why "Value" Matters More Than "Winners"
Here's something most punters get wrong: picking winners isn't the goal. Finding value is. If a team has a 60% chance of winning but the odds imply only a 50% chance, that's a value bet — even if the team loses. Over hundreds of bets, backing value consistently is what separates profitable punters from everyone else.
Our model doesn't just say "back Geelong this week." It quantifies the edge. If the model says Geelong should be $1.65 but the bookies have them at $1.85, that's a clear value play. If the model agrees with the market, we pass — no bet.
A Typical Week of AFL Tips
Here's what the process looks like each round:
- Tuesday–Wednesday: Model ingests updated team ratings, injury news, and market odds
- Thursday morning: Initial projections are generated for all nine matches
- Thursday evening: Tips are reviewed, cross-checked against line movements, and finalised
- Friday before first bounce: Full card of AFL tips delivered to Members via Telegram
